Greenhouse Production Workshop

Seminar Description

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the Alabama Nursery & Landscape Association, and allied industries will hold a Greenhouse Production Short Course on Thursday, August 25, 2005.

The workshop will provide an depth lectures on correctly watering greenhouse crops, which if frequently a challenge for experienced growers and employees just starting to learn crop culture. David Jewell from Sakata Seed Company will bring all of us up to date on pansies and pansy marketing opportunities. He will be followed by a discussion of the benefits of greenhouse sanitation practices and how to implement a sanitation program in your business.

In the afternoon, we will feature a panel of growers from different of greenhouse businesses who will discuss a wide range of greenhouse topics. Ever wished you could discuss ideas, problems, questions with a group of growers? Here’s your chance! Give it a little thought and come prepared to join in the discussion.

The shot course is designed for growers, managers and employees. Therefore, management is encouraged to bring their employees to the short courses. This is an opportunity to share information and experiences with speakers, allied industry representatives, and other growers.

Incorrect watering of greenhouse crops is one of the most common causes of crop delay, a reduction of crop quality, or crop loss. Dr. Kessler will discuss management of crop watering from the grower standpoint and practical “how to” methods for those learning how to water crop.

10:00-10:45    Marketing pansies, or how to put a smile on your face

David Jewell

David Jewell from Sakata will talk about capturing your "fair share" of the exploding Halloween decorating dollar. He will discuss containers that product is retailed in, retail display, utilizing color, expanding the offering, scheduling, new opportunities and merchandising at retail.

Pesticide applications get more expensive every year both because of the cost of the chemicals and the labor to put them out. Dr. Kessler will discuss sanitation strategies that you can implement in your business to reduce the cost and risk of pesticides while making your operation a more pleasant place of work.

Carole Barton, David Wright, Tommy Loder, John Nelson, and others

Attendees should bring their questions, problems, and great ideas to puzzle and challenge our panel of experienced greenhouse growers. Moderated by Raymond Kessler, our panel will discuss how they use plant growth retardants, water crops, deal with pesky insects and diseases, and many other topics. Come prepared to join in the discussion.
