Hurricane Losses

Last Thursday, September 22, nursery crop producers in the Mobile/Baldwin County area held a follow-up meeting at the Jon Archer Ag Center to meet with government officials and express their concerns about hurricane-related damage to their operations.  Approximately 175 growers made the effort to attend and represent our industry.  Thank you so much to all who took the time to come to this important meeting.

Dr. Deacue Fields, AU Dept of Ag Economics, put together the report that follows.  Thanks, Deacue, for your help with this!  His report will be forwarded to our representatives in Washington, DC, along with our requests for changes to official language in various programs so that nursery growers can be included in agricultural aid packages (see below).

Hurricane Disaster Nursery Losses for the Mobile County Area

 This summary is based on losses incurred within the 50 weeks from Ivan to Katrina which include named storms Cindy and Dennis.  This reflects 59 entries out of 210 possible responses in Mobile and Baldwin Counties combined.

Reported inventory value is $94.4 million with an average per nursery of $2,483,752.

Individual nursery inventory loss was as low as 2% and as high as 100%.

Acres in production = 2,186.

The crop value per acre is $43,161.

 Total losses = $14,579,520 which consists of the following:

  • Loss inventory = $4,654,415
  • Loss structures = $1,956,633
  • Loss equipment = $318,806
  • Loss sales = $2,757,250
  • Labor – preparation = $577,434
  • Labor – storm watch (labor during storm address immediate major threats) = $117,997
  • Labor – clean up & recovery = $1,492,657
  • Delayed production (crop that will not be saleable on time because of storm damage) = $2,440,595
  • Generator purchase = $111,286
  • Power Saw Purchase = $5,000
  • Pumps (storm related) = $5,500
  • Fuel (storm related) = $3,356
  • Collateral loss (irrigation, ground cover, etc) = $138,591

 The average inventory loss per nursery per named storm event is $96,967.

The average total loss per nursery per named storm event is $247,110.

Total loss per acre is $6,667.
