Established in 1951, the ALabama Nursery & Landscape Association (ALNLA) is a professional association for those involved in and allied to the ornamental horticulture industry. Our Economic Impact Study shows what we suspected to be true—our industry contributes a whopping  2.9 billion dollars, including 44,000 jobs, to the economy of our state annually. The mission of the ALNLA, a non-profit trade association whose business is conducted by an elected board of directors, is to promote the success and professionalism of its membership. Through its annual Gulf States Horticultural Expo, educational seminars around the state and its link with other organizations both in Alabama and across the nation, the ALNLA strives to provide the information and support to make your business more efficient and profitable. Together we can accomplish goals that might be impossible for an individual business alone.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual who has contributed to the advancement of the horticulture industry within the state of Alabama and to the welfare of the ALNLA.

The Horizon Award recognizes a qualified individual for outstanding service in the field of nursery or greenhouse production, retail garden center, or landscape design, installation or maintenance within the state of Alabama.

The Landscaping Awards highlight individuals and companys that have proved their excellence by completing a project or provided maintanence that falls under one of the Landscaping Award Tiers.

The Awards Program of the Alabama Nursery & Landscape Association is a distinct means through which the Alabama Green Industry can promote public awareness of the impact of ornamental horticulture in environmental improvement. At the same time, the awards recognize the exceptional projects and operations of skilled professionals which enhance the beauty of the landscape and of the industry.

President Message
In our last newsletter, I talked about enjoying the spring rains because the hot dry summer would soon be here.  WOW, has it been hot! One thing is for sure.  You can never predict the weather.  We have seen Mother Nature’s wrath in the tornados of April 27th.  We have seen her stop the rain in a lot of places for more than 20 days in May.  More recently, we have welcomed the summer showers to provide just a bit of relief.  Although we can’t seem to predict the weather, it sure makes our industry exciting, stressful and rewarding year after year!

Just as the weather changes, many other things are changing in our industry.  Everyone is aware of the new legislation regarding immigration. I feel this one piece of legislation will change the green industry more than anything has in recent memory.  ALNLA has worked closely with several other state agencies and associations to make our voice known on this matter.  The ALNLA will be partnering with the Alabama Corporative Extension Service in a live webinar on July 26th from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. to answer your questions regarding the new immigration law.  During the webinar, you will be able to email your questions and have them answered by attorney Tommy Eden.  Look for more information and the log-in codes on our website.

Commissioner John McMillan has asked James to serve on the Recertification Review Committee for the Pest Management Program.  This committee will be tasked with providing assistance in the development of recertification criteria.   We continue to be very pleased with the willingness of the Department of Agriculture and Industries to work with us on green industry related items.

This year’s Auburn Landscape School is August 8th and 9th.  One of the topics on the agenda is the Toomer’s Trees story from Dr. Gary Keever.  Also, Randy Byars will lead us on a tour of Jordan Hare Stadium and the newly installed turf.  Make you plans to be a part of the group that walks on the turf of the 2010 National Champions!!
