Established in 1951, the ALabama Nursery & Landscape Association (ALNLA) is a professional association for those involved in and allied to the ornamental horticulture industry. Our Economic Impact Study shows what we suspected to be true—our industry contributes a whopping  2.9 billion dollars, including 44,000 jobs, to the economy of our state annually. The mission of the ALNLA, a non-profit trade association whose business is conducted by an elected board of directors, is to promote the success and professionalism of its membership. Through its annual Gulf States Horticultural Expo, educational seminars around the state and its link with other organizations both in Alabama and across the nation, the ALNLA strives to provide the information and support to make your business more efficient and profitable. Together we can accomplish goals that might be impossible for an individual business alone.

President Message

OUR PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Spring is definitely here!  Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and based on the comments of many in our industry, phones are ringing!

As everyone is busy moving forward, I would like to look back for just a moment.  While it seems almost a distant memory, the 2012 Gulf States Horticultural Expo was a great success.  There were over 3000 in attendance, and the mood on the floor seemed very upbeat.  Topics of conversation revolved more around the weather and the upcoming busy season than the economic situation of years past.  While our industry continues to face financial challenges, we are cautiously optimistic, and diligently working toward the proverbial “light at the end of the tunnel.”

The ALNLA is involved in two very exciting opportunities this spring.  A partnership of private and public organizations is spearheading an effort to quantify the importance of agriculture, forestry and related industries to the state’s economy.  The Alabama Agribusiness Council, of which ALNLA is a member, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Auburn University College of Agriculture and the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences are conducting an economic impact study of these industries.  This study will provide extremely valuable information for the promotion of agriculture and forestry in our state and beyond.

Another highlight for the ALNLA this spring is the sponsorship of an intern in the area of public horticulture.  The idea originated with Dr. John Floyd, who felt that increased exposure to the public garden concept would prove extremely beneficial to potential graduates, and in turn, highlight another career path in the field of horticulture.  The first internship will take place at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and will, in subsequent years, rotate to other public gardens in the state.

Thanks to each of you for the opportunity that you give this board to serve you and the green industry.  We consider it quite a privilege to represent such a wonderful organization!
